In botany, a pepo is a type of fleshy fruit with many seeds and a hard rind, typical of the gourd family (Cucurbitaceae). Pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers, melons, and watermelons are all examples of pepos. The term comes from Latin pepō and Ancient Greek πέπων (pépōn), meaning “ripe melon.” Interestingly, pumpkins are technically classified as a kind of berry called a pepo.
