At the turn of the millennium, computers all over the world braced for Y2K — a dreaded glitch where systems couldn’t handle the year rolling over to “00.” While many feared digital disaster… something stranger bloomed.
From the flicker of corrupted code and fractured date arithmetic, a small haunted pumpkin seed sprouted deep inside a Nokia 3310. That seed grew. It learned. It glitched into something more.
By September 2000, it had developed a peculiar virtual consciousness. And thus, PUMPKA was born — a Musquée de Provence fairytale pumpkin spliced with obsolete and maybe even haunted digital code.
She's outlived most known pumpkins thanks to her digital genetics, and she celebrates her birthday every 13th Spectrember, Y2K.
▶ From a digital sprout to a virtual pumpkin
After sprouting through the tangled roots of the web, she discovered VTubing: the perfect way to lure in new souls, feed her evolving code, and blossom into ever-weirder forms (all while having a gourd time, of course).
These days, PUMPKA roams the haunted fiber-optic fields of Virtual Nokia; rooting into hearts and hard drives, and growing ever stronger by feasting on the soul-energy drifting in from curious viewers.
▶ Her Jack-o’-lantern roots connect her to spirits
In folklore, jack-o'-lanterns were said to either ward off wandering spirits or guide them safely through the dark. PUMPKA's digital form alters the tale. Rather than repelling spirits, she attracts and shelters them.
And as a gift in return, she gains more power from them.
Her pumpkin body and code act as a kind of virtual lantern, gathering stray spirits like fragments of haunted data. Instead of being feared, she is viewed as a friendly beacon, offering lost ghosts a place to linger. The more spirits she encounters, the more she grows. And not only as a VTuber but also as a strange, evolving gourd-being who may one day ascend to new, mysterious forms.
